Pre-registration and admission
Admission requirements
A Bachelor's degree or equivalent ("Llicenciatura" or Engineering degree) from a recognized institution (minimum 180 ECTS or 3 years of full time study) is required. In any case the Degree should be such that it enables the student to enrol for a Master Program in the country where such a degree were awarded.
For further details follow the links below.
Admission criteria
The admission to the MSc in Photonics program is based on the academic record of the applicant (academic performance as well as adequacy of the degree of the applicant to the photonics program).
Optionally, it will be considered:
- A personal interview of the candidate with the Admission commission (if necessary)
- Recommendation letter from persons who have a scientific or academic record in the field of optics/photonics or related discipline
- Professional experience in the field of optics/photonics or related disciplines
- Provable scientific activity in the field of optics/photonics, such as for instance: collaboration with established research groups, scientific publications, or presentations to conferences
Application procedure (on-line pre-registration)
To enrol for academic year 2011-12 (lectures starting at the end of September 2011), all applicants must pre-register at any one of the three universities that host the MSc in Photonics (the Selection commission is unique). You must follow the application procedure from the University where you decide to apply:
- Online pre-registration at UPC
- Online pre-registration at UB
- Online pre-registration at UAB: go to Online pre-registration at UPC
You should upload copies of all necessary documents, including:
- Identity card (in case of European students) or passport,
- Previous Degree diploma, if already available,
- Transcripts of records, and
- Name, affiliation and e-mail address of, at least, one reference person (if possible send a support letter written by that person)
You should also express your motivation to enrol for the Master in Photonics, and should point out your level of English, as all lectures are given 100% in English.
If possible, the copy of the transcripts should be a legalized copy. If not possible, then you may upload a normal copy (in .pdf, for instance), but you should keep in mind that for your final registration, in September (in case you are admitted), you will be requested to provide legalized documents (see "Registration" section).
If some problem arises, or you have any question, please contact us directly (visit "Contact information" Section).
Please take into account that we cannot offer any scholarship for our Master students. We hope you can get a scholarship from some grant-awarding institution, maybe from your country (see 'Grants' section for some help), which in general is not easy, or you can cover yourself your travel and living expenses as well as the tuition fees (it is expected these will amount to around 2000€).
Deadline for Application
15 June 2011 is the deadline for pre-registration. You will be notified by e-mail of the outcome of your application as soon as possible, hopefully well before that date, after a meeting of the Selection commission. In case you need an advance notification (to apply for a Visa or a Grant, for example) please contact the Master's coordinators (see 'Contact Information' section).
Pre-registration can be performed even after 15 June, if places are still available, but always well before the beginning of the lecture period (end of September). If the online pre-registration procedure is closed, you should address directly to the Master's coordinators (see 'Contact Information' section), sending them all necessary information (CV, diploma, transcripts, motivation, letter,...). Please note that the master is limited to 30 students and thus admission after deadline will be subject to this limitation.
