Three universities and one photonics research institute in the BARCELONA area offer a comprehensive Master (MSc) program in PHOTONICS, the science and technology of LIGHT. PHOTONICS is one of the disciplines that will play a key role in the technology development of the 21st century. The Master aims at educating future researchers in this field and also promoting entrepreneurial activity in PHOTONICS amongst its students. Addressed to an international audience, the Master in Photonics is conducted in English.

Jeanologia Ideas Competition
Within the events supporting the International year of the Light 2015, Jeanologia company (member of the SECPhO cluster) is organizing and promoting a contest willing to award 6000€ to the best innovation project based on laser technology.

CX CatalunyaCaixa Foundation scholarship.
As in previous academic years, Fundació Catalunya – La Pedrera, through an agreement with UPC, will sponsor one scholarships of 5000€, for Spanish-nationality students that are registered in the Master in Photonics.
Students will have to apply for this scholarship, and the student with the best academic records and CV in general will be awarded.
The deadline for pre-enrolment and pre-payment (300€) to be admitted as a candidate for this grant is 05/07/2015.
Opening ceremony of the International Year of Light 2015 in Spain.
February 16th 2015 19:00 h, Poliorama Theatre, Barcelona.
The Committee for the celebration of the International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies 2015 in Spain organises an academic opening ceremony to be held at Poliorama Theatre in Barcelona. During the event, the president of the Committee, Professor María Josefa Yzuel, will announce the programme of activities to be developed across the year. Three keynote speakers will offer different perspectives about the role and impact of light in our lives:
The event will be enlivened by the performance of the internationally renowned cellist Lluís Claret.

Romain Quidant, professor of the Master in Photonics and researcher in ICREA (ICFO) has been awarded by the Generalitat de Catalunya and the Fundació Catalana per la Recerca i la Innovació (FCRI) with the Premi Nacional de Recerca (National Research Award), in the cateogry of Talent Jove (Young Talent)

Light plays an elemental role in our lives: in fact it is necessary for the existence of life. In addition, during the last few years, it has revolutionized the scientific and technologic development. On the occasion of the cellebration of the International Year of Light 2015, the professor Ramon Vilaseca explains us in this video the reasons of this homage as well as the multiple applications of the light.

The Erasmus Mundus Master 'Europhotonics' has been included to the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degrees (EMJMD) Catalogue.
A panel of external experts evaluated our Quality Review report (submitted by 15/01/2014) and the overall assessment was very good. Thus, starting August 2014, our Master has been included to the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degrees (EMJMD) Catalogue.

Advances in early detection of cancer.

The four institutions involved in the 'Master in Photonics' are at relevant positions in the ranking of the 'Excellence Mapping' website!
The web application “Mapping Scientific Excellence” (http://www.excellencemapping.net) allows for an analysis to reveal centers of excellence (institutions: universities and research-focused institutions) in different subject areas worldwide. The web application combines both, a list of institutions ordered by different indicator values (publication output and citation impact) and a map with circles visualizing spatially these values for geocoded institutions.
If you visit the web and consult the 'Physics and Astronomy' topic, you will see that ICFO is the top institution, and the other (UB, UAB, UPC) are also at relevent positions!

- Visit to laser applications company Laser Goded (2013):
The students of the course 'Laser Systems and Applications'. MSc in Photonics have visited the company Laser Goded in Polinya, Barcelona (Spain).
During the visit the students were shown different high power laser systems such as CO2 lasers for fast metal cutting or a diode fiber laser for precise cutting of highly reflective metals. The students could learn many practical aspects that are basic for the succeed of demanding cutting applications.
